Safe Driving Tips for Visitors to Sri Lanka


  • You must have a valid driver’s license.

  • Always wear your seat belt. It is the law.

  • Never carry more passengers than your vehicle will allow.

  • Obey the speed limits.

  • Obey all traffic signs.

  • Do not leave luggage visible as it will be stolen and customer will be responsible for glass     breakage and lock damage. Place luggage in the in the boot before parking. Do not park or let your     vehicles stand: where there is a parking prohibition. Parking on most payment areas in Colombo is     prohibited. Please use designated parking areas. The usual fee is Rs.25/- per hour. .

  • Watch for school vans and kids crossing roads near those school vans.

  • Watch for pedestrians crossing the roads near schools and in pedestrian crossings.

  • Always use turn signals when turning or changing lanes to warn nearby vehicles.

  • Cautiously watch for cow or other animals that may be crossing the road out of Colombo     sometimes.

  • Turn on your headlights when it is foggy, raining etc. To increase your visibility and so that others     drivers can see you.

  • Leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you so that you have plenty of     room to stop suddenly without casing and accident.

  • Don’t use your mobile phone while driving. Using mobile phone is strictly prohibited while driving in     Sri Lanka. Please use hands-free or Bluetooth facility.(Keep your eyes on the road)

  • In Sri Lanka majority are – three wheelers/ buses/ motor cyclists/ cyclists on the road in Sri Lanka.     Therefore be prepared to make sudden stops, because these are do not have proper working     indicator lights on their vehicles sometimes.


  • Headlamp flashing means make way for me.

  • Give way to vehicles from your right side on roundabouts

  • Make honk your horn to again attention.

  • Never drink and drive.

Newanjith Rent-A-Car will include this service free of charge to clients who rent a vehicle from us for a   minimum period of two weeks. When this condition is not met, a charge of USD 20.00 is applicable per temporary license issued. 

The DMT is open daily Monday – Friday (except on public holidays) from 9.00 am – 2.00 pm. A copy of the International driving license and photocopy of your passport must be furnished along with the application form. This temporary license is valid for a period of three months from the date of issue.
